Qualifications & experience
Mikel comes from Brisbane, Australia. He specialises in Counselling Psychology & Therapeutic approaches in Sport Psychology Practice and Athlete Mental Health and Wellbeing. Mikel balances his academic commitments while maintaining a private practice as a Registered Practitioner Psychologist (HCPC) specialising in Athlete Mental Health & Major Life Event support. He has an academic and practitioner background in nursing, behavioural science, counselling psychology and sport psychology. He is a full and founder member of The Division of Sport & Exercise Psychology (BPS) and is an Associate Fellow of the British Psychologists’ Society. He is a member of the BPS Register of Applied Psychology Practice Supervisors (Sport & Exercise) and also a Member of the Public Health Network Cymru Reference Group.
As part of his university student pastoral care work he leads on and coordinates Student Mental Wellbeing Support and Applied research. Along with MHFA training he also holds a certificate in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills (ASIST).
Mikel is currently a Senior Lecturer in Applied Sport Psychology / Athlete Mental Health and maintains a Private Practice (Blue Onion Psychology) as a HCPC Registered Practitioner Psychologist. In 2015 Mikel was awarded with a University Student-Led Teaching Fellowship in recognition of Teaching Excellence.
